Retaining & Landscaping

Titahi Bay – Retaining Walls & Outdoor Redevelopment

We were engaged to remediate failing half-round retaining walls and block walls, which were contributing to poor drainage and water ingress during heavy rainfall. Working closely with an engineer and the client, we redesigned the backyard to improve stability, drainage, and usability.

All existing walls were removed and profiles set for the new retaining walls. Access was gained via the neighbouring property, allowing machinery to be brought to site through a temporary boundary fence opening. Excavation was carried out using a conveyor system to safely remove material from the bank. Three new retaining walls were drilled and installed in stages, with Nova coil drainage installed behind each wall and connected to a collection sump. Once complete, the site was backfilled using the conveyor system, followed by the import of 10m³ of topsoil and full backyard reinstatement. New paver stairs were installed to improve access between the terraces, and the project was completed with the rebuild of the lower deck and stairs. Garapa hardwood was used for the decking, stairs, and balustrade, providing a durable and high-quality finish.

New Build

Herald Street – Basement Construction

The client required additional storage and workshop space beneath their property. With no available land for expansion, the solution was to excavate and construct a new basement under the existing house.

This involved propping the house externally to allow excavation beneath the building footprint. The digger excavated to the required depth and beyond the basement perimeter to allow space for waterproofing. Once excavation was complete, the site was levelled and slab preparation carried out. New block walls were constructed, along with a new partition wall between the existing house and the basement due to the poor condition of the original wall. Timber joinery was installed throughout the basement, and new 12mm plywood wall linings and ceilings were fitted between the house and kitchen area. The block walls were painted white, and the concrete floors were polished and sealed. The house was fully reinstated, including the installation of a new kitchen. Retaining work was completed along the neighbouring boundary, and in-situ concrete stairs were poured to provide access.

Repairs

Nicholson Road – Balustrade Capping Replacement

The client requested replacement cappings to their cedar balustrade, as the existing cappings had begun to rot. The new cappings were rebated to sit neatly over the existing cladding.

As new 200×50 cedar was difficult to source, rough-sawn retaining timber was used instead. The underside was carefully routed to ensure correct fit over the weatherboards, then stained black to match the existing balustrade for a consistent finish.

Renovation

Webb Street – Bathroom Repair & Renovation

This bathroom required extensive repairs after a long-term leak went unreported by previous tenants, resulting in significant damage. All affected wall linings were removed, and the existing floor was lifted.

The floor was rebuilt using 21mm treated plywood, and the plumber replaced all damaged pipework with new services. Affected walls were relined, followed by the installation of a new shower and vanity. The project was completed with plastering and painting, restoring the bathroom to a clean, modern, and functional condition.
